And, I especially appreciated that even in "normal" times, there were hand sanitizing stations or wash basins EVERYWHERE! The exhibits are ample sized and well maintained. Well laid out, much of the pathways are shaded, (great in Florida in the summer!) where there isn't a tree canopy, there are many places to duck into the shade for a bit. Just 50 acres, so it's an easy walk for small children and their grandparents. This delightful private zoo is a true gem on the panhandle Gulf Coast. He likes to swipe the entire cup of feed out of your hand and run off in a mad dash very pleased with himself. The parking lot is packed during the summer and winter months there is a lot to see and many animals to interact with just beware of the Carmel. However, let's face it, zoo are expensive to run and animals must be well cared for. A family of 4 could easily spend $100 in an afternoon between admissions and food to feed the animals which of course is on every child's list of favorite things to do. My only hesitation in giving this attraction a higher rating is the cost of admission.

There is also a picnic area to rest and indulge in your appetite. It covers the whole park and offers a close up view of many species. A must do on your visit is the train ride. There is a wooden tower to observe grass land animals such as antelope but is equipped with ramps as well as stairs. The paths through the various exhibits are smooth and strollers and wheelchairs have no difficulty maneuvering. One of these sweet little guys decided he loved my grand daughter and kept trying to stow away in her jacket pocket.

The bird enclosure is full of multicolored parakeets that fly free and love to nibble on seed from specially constructed popsicle sticks. Some of my grand children's favorite pastimes were feeding the giraffes and alligator as well as the bird aviary. Visitors can feed and pet various animals and even a Llama who just might decide to spit. The animals are well cared for and content. Bottom line is if you were disappointed in the past, come back and enjoy the changes. Now a new day has come for this little zoo and new owners have taken great pains to restore and improve the property. This zoo was almost closed a few years back and had been poorly maintained.
